Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, a few kilometres west of Mavelikkara, is one of the most important Devi temples of southern Kerala. The goddess here is Sree Bhadrakali, the fierce mother born to destroy the demon Daruka, and devotees believe she shows three faces through the day: Saraswati in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga, or Bhadrakali, in the evening.
The temple belongs as much to its people as to its priests. Thirteen surrounding villages, the karas, see the Devi as their own, and once a year, on Bharani day in Kumbham, they bring her their great offering – the Kettukazhcha, towering chariots and horse figures built by hand over weeks, which turn the paddy fields in front of the temple into one of Kerala's grandest festival sights.
The story of how the Devi came to Chettikulangara begins with hurt pride. The elders of the area, it is said, were slighted at a temple nearby and resolved to have a goddess of their own. They went to Kodungallur and prayed to the Bhagavathy there for days, and were blessed with a vision that she would come to Chettikulangara.
Soon afterwards, the story goes, a boatman was asked late one evening by an old woman to ferry her across the water. He took her over and rested under a tree, and at dawn she was gone. A lady of a nearby Brahmin household had a similar experience of the goddess appearing and vanishing, and the people understood that the Devi had arrived; the temple was built where she had chosen to stay. Because she is believed to be a daughter of Kodungallur Bhagavathy, the Aswathy festival in Meenam is seen as a farewell before she goes to visit her mother.
The temple is believed to be more than twelve centuries old. One tradition says it was consecrated in the 9th century by Padmapadacharya, a disciple of Adi Sankara, though this is debated, and the present sreekovil is thought to date from around the 16th century. Historians place the Kettukazhcha in its present form in the early 19th century; a local story links it to a vow made by village chiefs stranded far from home during canal work. The temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board, while the thirteen karas keep the festival traditions alive.

Traditional Kerala dress is expected. Men usually wear a mundu and remove their shirt before entering the inner temple; women wear a saree, set-mundu, a long skirt with blouse or a churidar. Rules can change, so please follow the temple's current notices.
By the temple's tradition, entry to the inner temple is for Hindus; please follow the temple's current notices. The festival grounds and the Kettukazhcha in the fields can be watched by everyone. Leave footwear outside and ask before taking photographs inside.
On an ordinary day the temple is calm, and early morning is lovely. Kumbha Bharani (Feb–Mar) brings enormous crowds – roads are closed or diverted, and the Kettukazhcha is best seen from the afternoon into the night. If you go on Bharani, arrive early, keep children close and follow police and volunteer directions.
Kuthiyottam is a traditional vow in which families present young boys, trained in a ritual dance, before the Devi on Bharani day. It is a deeply held devotional practice; visitors are asked to watch respectfully and follow the organisers' instructions.
